CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
The CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme, initiated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is an excellent opportunity for young researchers to contribute to India’s scientific growth. Objectives of the Fellowship
The primary goal of the CSIR-Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is to identify innovative young researchers with fresh ideas and provide them the resources to grow into independent researchers. With a focus on cutting-edge research, the fellowship provides an ideal platform to build careers in scientific research and development. Every year, CSIR plans to offer 100 fellowships to fresh PhD holders, enabling them to work in CSIR laboratories equipped with advanced R&D facilities.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the fellowship, the following eligibility requirements must be met:
Candidates must hold a PhD degree or should have submitted their PhD thesis. Those about to submit their thesis are also eligible, but their final selection depends on the submission of their thesis before the fellowship offer’s validity expires.
Applicants should have a proven research record in high-impact SCI journals.
The scheme is open to Indian nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). Up to 20% of fellowships may be allocated to foreign nationals.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The maximum age limit for applying is 32 years, with relaxations provided:
5 years for SC/ST/Physically Handicapped and women candidates.
3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates.
Fellowship Tenure and Remuneration
The fellowship is awarded for a period of two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension based on outstanding performance and the recommendation of the CSIR lab Director.
Selected fellows will receive:
A consolidated fellowship of ₹65,000/- per month.
House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per government norms.
A contingency grant of ₹3.0 lakhs per annum, 25% of which can be used for domestic and international travel.
Selection Process
Candidates can apply at any time of the year, following the prescribed format available on the CSIR-HRDG website. However, selections are made twice annually, in June and December. Applications must be submitted two months before the interview date.
The selection process involves:
Shortlisting based on the research proposal.
Presentation of the research project followed by an interview with a CSIR committee.
Candidates from abroad may be interviewed in absentia.
Accommodation and Benefits
Accommodation may be provided by the respective CSIR laboratory based on availability. Fellows are also entitled to medical benefits as per CSIR’s Research Associate rules.
